Deputy Defense Secretary
John J. Hamre said the U.S. is facing an "Electronic Pearl
Harbor" and asked industry representatives to take appropriate
steps to protect the telecommunications infrastructure used by the
Defense Department and other Government organizations. He spoke
to members of the President's National Security Telecommunications
Advisory Committee (NSTAC) at the State Department's Dean Acheson

Defense Secretary William
S. Cohen emphasized the Government's reliance on the telecommunications
industry's expertise, talent and creativity to tackle the telecommunications
challenges facing the country. Cohen spoke to members of the President's
National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC)

Attorney General Janet Reno
said industry and Government still face many challenges in tackling
telecommunications issues. These issues include Freedom of Information
Act concerns, quick response to systems intrusion and a need for
industry to share proprietary information. Reno's remarks were made
during the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee
(NSTAC) executive session, held December 11 at the Old Executive

Vice President Al Gore said
the President must have the National Security Telecommunications
Advisory Committee's (NSTAC) careful insight to challenges facing
the Nation, adding that NSTAC should work to forecast plans, policy
and resources to address information security in new and innovative
ways. The Vice President made those remarks before NSTAC's executive
session December 11 at the Old Executive Office Building in Washington.
