President Continues
NSTAC through September 2011
Arlington VA, October
02, 2009 - President Barack Obama extended the National
Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee until September 30,
2011 after signing Executive Order 13511 September 29. The Executive
Order – Continuance of Certain Federal Advisory Committees
– continues NSTAC, as well as 14 other federal committees
which advise the President on a variety of national issues.
Executive Order 12382 dictates that NSTAC provide
advice to the President through the Secretary of Homeland Security,
who serves as the Executive Agent for the National Communications
System (NCS). The NCS has supported NSTAC activities since the committee’s
creation in 1982.
President Ronald Reagan created NSTAC by Executive
Order 12382 in September 1982. For 27 years, the committee has provided
industry-based analyses and recommendations to the President and
the Executive Branch on a wide range of policy and technical issues
related to telecommunications, information systems, information
assurance, infrastructure protection, and other national security
and emergency preparedness communications concerns.
NSTAC is composed of up to 30 presidentially appointed
industry leaders – usually chief executive officers (CEOs)
– representing various elements of the telecommunications
industry. The current NSTAC chair is Edward Mueller, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of Qwest Communications.
