NCS Director Brenton Greene Announces Resignation

Arlington, Va., June 24, 2004 - , who has run the day-to-day operations of the National Communications System since April 2001, has indicated his intent to resign from government and return to the private sector, effective July 2. Over the past year, he has coordinated the transition of the National Communications System from the Department of Defense to the Department of Homeland Security, working for Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection, Mr. Robert P. Liscouski, Manager of the NCS.

Dr. Peter M. Fonash, currently Chief of the NCS Technology and Programs Division, will serve as Acting Deputy Manager pending selection of a permanent replacement. During his three-plus years with the NCS, Mr. Greene provided dynamic leadership in strengthening NCS efforts in coordinating the restoration of national security and emergency preparedness telecommunications during times of emergency. These accomplishments included telecommunications coordination efforts in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, helping to earn a Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation for the NCS from the Secretary of Defense.

He worked tirelessly with the President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) to enhance and improve Government/industry partnerships in support of emergency communications and to support telecommunications in support of the Nation's other critical infrastructures.

During his tenure, the NCS initiated a Wireless Priority Service capability across the nation, partnered with industry, allowing key national security and emergency preparedness decision makers to communicate with cellular phones during periods when wireless networks were saturated. He also led the NCS transition efforts in taking the 40-year-old Federal organization from the Department of Defense to the Department of Homeland Security.
