Raytheon’s
Swanson Appointed by President to NSTAC
Arlington,
Va., May 06, 2004 - President Bush announced on May 6,
2004 that he is appointing William H. Swanson, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of Raytheon Company, to the President’s
National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).
Mr. Swanson replaces Daniel P. Burnham, who retired from Raytheon
last summer.
The President's NSTAC is composed of up to 30 presidentially
appointed industry leaders (usually chief executive officers). In
its advisory role to the President, the NSTAC provides industry-based
analyses and recommendations on a wide range of policy and technical
issues related to telecommunications, information assurance, infrastructure
protection, and other national security and emergency preparedness
concerns. The current NSTAC chair is Dr. Vance D. Coffman, Chairman
and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
In this role, Mr. Swanson leads Raytheon’s government
and defense operations that comprise seven major businesses, which
generate approximately $15 billion in annual sales and include over
63,500 employees.
Mr. Swanson is also responsible for the four Strategic Business
Areas of Raytheon, which are Missile Defense, Precision Strike,
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and Homeland Security.
Before assuming this position, he was a Raytheon Executive Vice
President and President of the company’s electronic systems
segment.
Mr. Swanson joined Raytheon Company in 1972 and has
held a wide range of challenging positions, including manufacturing
manager of the company’s Equipment Division, senior vice president
and general manager of the Missile Systems Division, general manager
of Raytheon Electronic Systems and chairman and chief executive
officer of Raytheon Systems Company.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Swanson
serves on the California Polytechnic State University School of
Engineering Advisory Council, the Pepperdine University board of
regents, and on the board of visitors of the Graziadio School of
Business and Management at Pepperdine University. He is also a member
of the Editorial Advisory Board of The Journal of Electronic Defense.
He is a trustee of the Association of the U.S. Army and serves as
a member of the National Defense Industrial Association, the Navy
League, and the Air Force Association.
A native of California, Mr. Swanson graduated magna
cum laude from California Polytechnic State University with a bachelor’s
degree in industrial engineering. His graduate work was performed
in business administration at Golden Gate University and in 2002
he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Pepperdine
University.
He was selected as the Outstanding Industrial Engineering
Graduate in 1972, and in 1991 was recognized as the Honored Alumnus
from California Polytechnic State University School of Engineering.
In 2002, Swanson received the Semper Fidelis Award from the U.S.
Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. In 2003,
Mr. Swanson received the Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine
Laurel Award for “significant contributions” to the
field of Aeronautics/Propulsion. He was also named the “California
Manufacturer of the Year” by the California Manufacturing
& Technology Association.
