Qwest’s Nacchio Nominated by President to Become NSTAC Vice Chair

Joseph P. NacchioWashington D.C., July 16, 2001 - President Bush announced on July 9, 2001, that he intends to appoint Joseph P. Nacchio, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Qwest Communications International, Inc., as Vice Chair of the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).

The President's NSTAC is composed of up to 30 Presidentially appointed industry leaders (usually chief executive officers). In its advisory role to the President, the NSTAC provides industry-based analyses and recommendations on a wide range of policy and technical issues related to telecommunications, information assurance, infrastructure protection, and other national security and emergency preparedness concerns. The current NSTAC chair is Daniel P. Burnham, Chairman and CEO of Raytheon Company.

Mr. Nacchio joined Qwest, headquartered in Denver, Colorado in early 1997 and led it through a public stock offering in June 1997. Qwest is a leader in reliable, scalable and secure broadband Internet-based data, voice and image communications for businesses, consumers, and government applications.

Prior to joining Qwest, Mr. Nacchio held senior-level executive assignments at AT&T Corporation. He was instrumental in shaping the company's brand identity while directing its long-distance profit centers. Under his leadership, the consumer long distance business won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for excellence.

Mr. Nacchio is Chairman of the Board of KPNQwest, a European joint venture of Qwest and KPN, the Dutch communications company. In addition to being a Director of Qwest Communications, he is a member of the board of TechNet, an organization of Internet-based companies; Slingshot Networks LLC; and Delbarton School. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of Unitel Communications Inc., of Toronto, Canada; the Internet Communications Corporation of Denver; the Competitive Telecommunications Association of Washington, D.C.; and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

A number of awards have been presented to Mr. Nacchio for his business accomplishments including: 1999 Colorado Businessman of the Year by the Rocky Mountain News; Denver Business Journal's "Man of the Year" and "Telecom Deal of the Year" for leading the merger with US WEST; "Upside Magazine's "Elite 100 Most Influential People in the Digital World" for 1998 and 1999; Time Digital magazine's top 50 Information Technology executives; Network World's top 25 networking executives; and Industry Standard magazine's top 21 Internet executives.

Under his leadership, Qwest has been cited by Forbes ASAP magazine as the top telecommunications company in 1999; the Financial Times and Interactive Week newspapers and BusinessWeek and Wired magazines cited Qwest for its fast growth in the Internet marketplace.

Mr. Nacchio earned a master of science degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Sloan Fellows Program. He also received a master of business administration degree from New York University and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from New York University.
